QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner issued the following statement after the Government refused to commit to a ban on small business evictions:
“Today I asked the Finance Minister point blank if he would freeze small business evictions, which will be starting on Friday, and he dodged the question.
It’s the eleventh hour for small businesses and the Government is basically washing its hands of the problem.
I urge the Premier to listen to the concerns of local business owners who say the rent relief program is not working.
Life savings are on the line for many. Jobs are at risk for many more.
But instead of saving local businesses from eviction, the Minister said he’s going to wait-and-see what happens.
An economic reopening plan isn’t much good if places have already gone out of business.”
