TORONTO — MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the release of the second report on the Ontario Science Centre roofing.
“The destruction of the Ontario Science Centre is a choice, and the Premier is the one making it.
The government’s negligence has led the building to fall into a state of disrepair that we would never allow for other cultural landmarks.
Other buildings – like the ROM or the CN Tower – are properly repaired and restored because we recognize their historical, cultural and educational value. Why not this building in this community?
There is no doubt that the current Science Centre needs significant repairs – the only roadblock is that the Premier does not see the value of the site and the financial, cultural and economic benefits it provides for the residents of Don Valley and people all across Ontario.
His priority has always been to prop up his Ontario Place privatization scheme, which the Auditor General found evidence of in his 2023 annual report.
It’s not fair that the Premier is putting the private interest of a foreign-owned mega spa before Ontarians. The people of Ontario are not going to take this lying down, and the Premier needs to answer to them. If he’s not prepared to, he needs to get out of the way.”
