QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the government appealed the court’s decision to strike down the Student Choice Initiative:
“The Student Choice Initiative is part of the Premier’s power trip against academic institutions and student life.
It puts the future of campus newspapers, radio stations, food banks and social justice groups in limbo because groups rely on these fees to provide valuable services to students.
Clearly the Premier overstepped his bounds by interfering with the freedom of student associations, and he should accept the ruling rather than escalate it to the next level.
I’m calling on the government to withdraw the appeal, end the attack on student democracy, and make students unions whole by covering their legal costs.”
