QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to severe flooding.
“Thank you to the first responders and city workers who are working hard to keep people safe and repair damage after yesterday’s storm flooded roads, left thousands without power and damaged property.
Severe flooding like this is getting more common as climate change gets worse, but the government is missing in action.
This government has no plan to keep our communities safe from severe weather and Ontarians are the ones paying the price.
In 2024, GTA floods cost more than $4 billion. But instead of investing in climate change preparedness, the government is slashing protections for our farms, forests and wetlands that absorb excess water.
I am calling on the government to restore funding for Conservation Authorities and wetland protections and to step up with a real climate action plan that keeps people safe.”
