GUELPH — MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to new data from the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions showing widespread burnout among public-sector hospital workers due to staffing shortages and unmanageable workloads.
“The horror stories we’re hearing from our public-sector hospital workers are deeply troubling, and they should absolutely be a wake-up call for this government.
Forty-one percent of workers dread going into work every single day. They’re overworked, underpaid and trapped in a system that’s been designed to fail.
The government’s reckless mismanagement of our healthcare system is fuelling a mental health crisis among our public-sector workers who are unable to provide the quality of care they’re trained to provide.
When our healthcare system suffers, we all do. It’s long past time for the Ford government to step up with real solutions to the out-of-control healthcare crisis.
I fully support OCHU/CUPE’s calls for increased healthcare funding to improve staff recruitment and retention, add full-time jobs to the public system, and increase stability and continuity of hospital care.”
