For Immediate Release – Member of Provincial Parliament Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the Financial Accountability Office’s latest economic monitor, which shows housing starts have fallen to their lowest level in over 15 years.
“Today’s FAO report reveals that housing starts in 2025 Q1 were down more than 20% from the previous quarter. Just 12,700 homes were started last quarter – the lowest number since 2009, and far below what’s needed to meet the government’s target of 1.5 million homes by 2031.
Across the province, families are struggling to make ends meet and homelessness is skyrocketing. Yet this government continues to pour money into wasteful projects like the tunnel under the 401, instead of investing in what people actually need: affordable homes in the communities they want to live in.
Ontarians deserve better.”
