  • Marine mammal captivity must come to an end

QUEEN’S PARK — MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to news that a beluga whale and bottlenose dolphin have died at Marineland.

“The news coming out of Marineland is extremely distressing. These latest deaths mark the third confirmed marine mammal death at Marineland in the last few months alone.

This is a stark reminder that the captivity of whales and dolphins needs to come to a permanent end.

In 2021, Ontario’s Animal Welfare Services found that all marine mammals at Marineland were in distress due to the condition of the water.

Two years later, nothing has been done.

Whales and dolphins are highly intelligent and social creatures that should not be living in such deplorable conditions. They should not be held in captivity or used for entertainment.

I renew my call to end marine mammal captivity, and I call on the Ministry of the Solicitor General to conduct an in-depth investigation into the causes of the latest deaths.”
