GUELPH — Mike Schreiner released the following statement to mark the start of Black History Month.
“Black History Month is an important time to learn, recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black community members to the history, culture and identity of our province.
As we celebrate, it is important to also recognize that anti-Black racism is still present in our society, and to recommit to addressing its systemic roots.
If we truly want to build a more equitable and caring province, country and world, we must invest in anti-racism strategies and initiatives across every level of society to reverse the damage of past and present injustices.
Ontario is stronger because of our diversity. It’s crucial that we take time – not just this month, but every month – to recognize the past and present accomplishments of Black community members in Ontario and beyond.
I look forward to taking this time to listen, learn and reflect on the work ahead of us, and I encourage everyone to take part in the many events recognizing Black History Month in their communities.”
