MPP Mike Schreiner, released the following statement from Thunder Bay to mark Earth Day.
“Ontario cannot wait for bold, decisive climate action. The time to act is now.
Ontarians across the province are putting in the work to secure a better tomorrow. We have been inspired by advocacy of grassroots groups that are fighting to protect the Greenbelt, and to stop harmful projects, like Highway 413.
But we need a government that understands the urgency of the climate crisis—because if we don’t take bold, collective action, we will pay the price for generations to come.
Ontario has the potential to be a climate leader. We have the resources. We have the talent. And we have passionate professionals ready to drive a transition to clean energy – creating good, green jobs and moving us toward energy independence with made-in-Ontario solutions.
But to get there, we need bold investment in renewable energy from the government.
Instead, the government is doubling down on polluting gas plants and pipelines, while weakening protections for the places we love.
Just last week, they put forward legislation repealing the Endangered Species Act and watering down environmental assessments – allowing for harmful projects to move ahead before understanding their full impact on people and the environment.
This is the wrong direction for Ontario.
This Earth Day, let’s demand better together. We must make choices that lead to a stronger, safer, more affordable future.”
