GUELPH – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to CUPE’s latest report on Ontario’s hospital crisis.
“Healthcare workers have been sounding the alarm over Ontario’s collapsing healthcare system for years.
Now, with workers stretched thin and more cuts on the horizon, this crisis is about to get a lot worse.
Because of the Ford government’s cuts, at least 1000 jobs are being slashed and hospitals are facing a 4,080 staffed bed capacity shortfall.
Ontario has the lowest healthcare funding per capita of any province in Canada and hospitals are struggling to provide patients with appropriate care in a timely manner.
This government is failing Ontarians by refusing to implement common sense solutions like nurse-to-patient ratios, and instead increasing privatisation of Ontario’s healthcare system and continuing to put healthcare profits over people.
We call on the Ford government to stop privatisation and implement CUPE’s recommendations to step up with real, investment-backed solutions to the crisis in our hospitals.”
