QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to federal reporting that predicts Ontario’s emissions will increase by 143.2 per cent in 2027 compared to 2023.
“This summer, Ontarians felt the impact of the climate crisis like never before. One of the worst wildfire seasons on record forced thousands to evacuate their homes and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
And yet the government is on track to drive up pollution from fossil fuels by more than 140 per cent.
These numbers paint a bleak picture for Ontario’s future. One where poor air and water quality, frequent unsafe weather, and a fragile food supply threaten our daily lives.
But this is a choice from the government, and it doesn’t have to be this way.
Global investment in the clean energy economy reached $2.3 trillion in 2025 alone. That’s investment that could be coming to Ontario–creating good-paying, generational jobs in our communities while cutting climate pollution.
It’s time for this government to invest in made-in-Ontario wind solar, and energy storage to create jobs, lower energy bills, bring down emissions and reduce reliance on American energy.
