QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement responding to the FAO’s 2024-2025 Interprovincial Budget Comparison:
“Out of all the provinces in Canada, Ontario is coming dead last in funding the things every day people need.
This government is starving public education, health care and social services. The Premier and his donors may not be feeling the effects, but everyday people are.
We feel it when we rush to our local emergency room only to find it shut down or to be treated in a hallway.
Our kids feel it when their classes keep getting bigger with fewer and fewer supports. Or when students with special needs get sent home early because their teachers just don’t have the tools to meet their needs.
People on Ontario Works and ODSP feel it when they can’t make rent or afford groceries because this government refuses to raise social assistance rates above the poverty line.
This government has endless money to spend on a floating convention centre, an island airport and a personal luxury jet. But when it comes to taking care of everyday people, there’s nothing left.
It’s time for this government to get its priorities straight. It’s time to stop the wasteful spending that only benefits the rich and powerful, and time to start making real investments in people and the services we all rely on.”
