  • Schreiner statement on commercial evictions

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the Ontario business community asked for a temporary moratorium on commercial evictions:

“The Premier’s ‘wait-and-see’ attitude is bad for small businesses in Ontario.

Today the Ontario business community asked the province for a temporary moratorium on evictions, but the Premier would only pass the buck to landlords with vague threats.

Small businesses need a champion, not a cheerleader.

Instead of wagging his finger at landlords, the Premier could actually save small businesses without costing the province a penny.

It is wrong that small businesses doing everything right to follow public health measures and keep staff on payroll might be evicted.

The Premier is choosing to let small businesses risk losing the roof over their heads rather than using his power to prevent it.”
