QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner is set to table a bill calling on the Ford government to legalize gentle density and build more affordable homes in the communities people love, not where it is most profitable for wealthy speculators.
“It’s time to stop letting wealthy speculators dictate how and where we build homes,” said Schreiner.
“The fastest, cheapest and most practical homes we can build are somewhere in the middle—affordable homes in the places we already live, work and spend our time.”
Today, Schreiner will table the Homes You Can Afford in the Communities You Love Act.
If passed, this bill would legalize building fourplexes in existing neighbourhoods and multiplexes along major transit corridors and in single-tier and lower-tier municipalities with a population of at least 100,000 people. It would also reduce common barriers to building more missing middle housing, like parking requirements or minimum setbacks.
“This is how we start building homes that work for people, not profits,” said Schreiner.
