QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after FAO released a report on Ontario’s job market during the Covid-19 Pandemic:
“With 1 in 3 jobs in this province directly affected by the virus, the vulnerability of our economy and social safety net has been laid bare.
We must focus on immediate help for small businesses to prevent job losses and maintain the vibrancy of our downtowns and neighbourhoods.
The report shows that small businesses have been hit more than any other sector. The government must take action now by implementing these measures:
- Freeze on commercial rent evictions until the pandemic is over
- Grants of up to $5,000 for small businesses to assist with rent, utilities and public health measures
- Make CECRA mandatory for those who would be eligible
It’s clear that we need to emerge from this crisis with investments in a cleaner, healthier, more caring Ontario.
The global clean economy is worth $26 trillion and Ontario can create new career opportunities and prosperity by being a global leader as we transition to the new normal.
When we are ready, the government must fast-track good, green, shovel-ready projects that will create jobs, deliver economic returns, and reduce pollution.”
