GUELPH – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to the announcement that OPG has signed an MOU with the Municipality of Port Hope to build new nuclear at the Wesleyville site:
“The government is digging their heels into high-cost, slow-to-build nuclear plants while everyday people foot the bill.
At a time when Ontario’s unemployment rate is sky-high and electricity bills continue to climb, we need urgent action to create jobs and expand Ontario’s grid while keeping costs low.
Experts have been clear: the cheapest, fastest way to expand the grid and lower energy bills is to invest in Ontario-made wind, solar and energy storage solutions.
That’s why global investment in renewable energy is hitting record highs, led by nations in Asia and the EU who know that low-cost renewables will keep costs low and create good-paying, generational jobs.
Meanwhile, Ontario is getting left behind. In the midst of a jobs crisis, we should be taking advantage of every opportunity to create good-paying, generational jobs right now, using Ontario steel to build locally produced low-cost renewable energy.”
