QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after Bill 184, Protecting Tenants and Strengthening Community Housing Act, passed in the legislature:
“I voted against Bill 184 because it makes life more difficult for vulnerable tenants at exactly the wrong time.
It is incredibly reckless for the Government to be creating housing instability in the middle of COVID-19, on-top of the employment hardship many are facing.
I worry about a Wild West of unregulated private agreements that become the basis for evicting vulnerable tenants on social assistance and disability.
Instead of helping people to shelter-in-place with a rent relief fund, the Premier is setting the stage for them to be evicted more easily.
A rent relief fund would provide a balanced approach that helps tenants who can’t afford rent because of the pandemic while helping landlords who have bills to pay as well.”
