QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement marking Treaties Recognition Week.
“Treaties Recognition Week is an opportunity for us to honour the importance of the more than 46 Treaties and agreements that protect the rights of Indigenous peoples and govern our shared responsibilities.
This week, we reflect on the role treaties play in reconciliation and in fostering equitable and respectful nation-to-nation relationships.
As government leaders, we have a responsibility to undertake the work of building these relationships with Indigenous communities who are still fighting to protect their lives, land and livelihoods today.
We will continue to fight back against harmful legislation, like Bill 5 and Bill 140 which threatens Indigenous sovereignty and undermines reconciliation efforts.
We hope all Ontarians will join us this week in learning more about the Treaties that cover where we work, learn and live.”
