QUEEN’S PARK — MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to the government’s proposed Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.
“With the provincial budget just days away, this government is desperately trying to distract from their failure to address the housing crisis.
This announcement is a drop in the bucket of what’s needed to help municipalities build new homes. It’s not even a third of the $5.1 billion this government took from municipalities under Bill 23.
If the government really wanted to build more homes people can afford in communities they know and love, they would get rid of outdated planning laws that keep us from building apartments, multiplexes and other types of missing middle housing. They would pass my bill to legalize housing.
Instead, they are siding with speculators and those saying no to housing over the millions of Ontarians who just want this government to build more homes and bring down soaring housing costs without sprawling onto our farms, forests and wetlands.”
