QUEEN’S PARK – Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement outlining his priorities for the upcoming Fall Economic Statement.

“Hardworking Ontarians are being left behind by the government.

Homes are unaffordable. ERs are shutting down. Our kids are crammed into crowded classrooms. People are being forced to choose between a roof and food.

The government continues to cut back on funding for the basics. Meanwhile, Ontario’s super rich are sitting on billions of dollars untaxed, and the government refuses to do anything about it.

That’s why we are calling for a wealth tax on Ontario’s super rich—to generate the money we need to bring fairness and affordability to Ontario.

In tomorrow’s Fall Economic Statement, we are looking for real commitments to make life easier and more affordable for Ontarians through investments in:

  • Homes people can afford in the communities they love, including deeply affordable and supportive housing;
  • Affordable and accessible public healthcare, including fair pay for healthcare workers;
  • High-quality public education so students and education workers can learn and work and safe, supportive environments; and
  • Made-in-Ontario energy, home-grown tech and manufacturing to support job creation and affordable energy.

Premier Ford will try to tell us the money’s not there. But that’s not true. Everyone else already pays their fair share. It’s time for the super rich to do the same.

This is an opportunity for the government to show us whose side they’re really on and put the people of this province before the super rich.”
