GUELPH — Ontario MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in support of TVO workers’ fight for secure jobs and fair pay.
“For over 50 years, TVO workers have helped Ontarians of all ages understand the province we live in.
But over the past several years of stagnant wages, rising housing costs and an affordability crisis being felt across the province, they have been left without the work conditions that allow them to deliver the quality journalism and programs our kids, students and all Ontarians deserve.
Like so many Ontarians, I value the journalism, children’s programming, education and documentaries produced by our provincial public broadcaster.
Public service workers deserve good jobs with fair pay. They deserve to be able to afford to live in the communities they work in.
But in the face of an ongoing shift from permanent employment to precarious contracts, coupled with the years of wage caps imposed by the government under Bill 124, TVO workers have instead received a raw deal.
There’s a reason this summer has been the summer of strikes across Ontario. Workers at TVO are struggling with the same things all Ontarians are facing – affording basic necessities like food and housing.
I know that stable jobs create a better work environment and allow employees to thrive.
I stand with the Canadian Media Guild members calling on the government to do the right thing and fund TVO like it matters.”
