GUELPH – MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement to mark Black History Month.
“This year marks 30 years of Black History Month and 30 years of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of the Black community to the history, culture, economy and identity of our country.
This year’s theme is “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations—From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”
For generations, Black Canadians have shown leadership, creativity, innovation and resilience. Their contributions have shaped our country and made it a better place to live.
As we take time to honour Black history, we must also reflect on Canada’s painful history of discrimination and racism. We must acknowledge that anti-Black racism remains a real and present threat in Canada today. We must confront discrimination and racism in our communities and take urgent action against it each and every day.
As we begin this month of celebration, we reaffirm our commitment to ending racism, standing up against hate and working to build an Ontario that is inclusive and just.”
