QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement responding to the governments latest legislation, Putting Student Achievement First Act:
“Parents, students and teachers have been sounding the alarm for years over how the government’s underfunding of Ontario’s education system is hurting students.
This government’s response is to give itself more power, create more bureaucracy and cut resources for teachers and classrooms.
How is this going to make things better for teachers managing larger-than-ever class sizes, or for students with special needs who already aren’t getting the support they need?
The role of trustees is to be a voice for families and communities in the decisions that will affect their everyday lives. But if this new legislation passes, local voices will be further silenced.
I am calling on the government to halt their attack on local democracy and start making meaningful investments in public education.”
