QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to high school teachers voting in favour of strike action:
“High school students and teachers are bearing the brunt of the Premier’s attacks on public education.
Based on this overwhelming strike vote, it is clear that educators are united in their resolve to resist the Premier’s plan to axe 10,000 teaching positions.
These cuts are already harming students, leaving teachers with no other choice but to draw a line in the sand.
And the government made the possibility of good-faith negotiations even harder by attacking bargaining rights with Bill 124.
We all want to avoid an interruption to the school year.
Instead of painting teachers as the villains, the government should back down on its drastic increase to class sizes, which is the true threat to education.”
