  • Battery beats gas despite government’s best efforts

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in responding to news of the largest battery procurement in Ontario’s history:

“Despite this government’s efforts to tip the scales in favour of gas, low-cost battery storage won the government’s competitive procurement process and will supply 640 MW of capacity to our grid.

This is a huge win that will make life more affordable and create good, generational jobs for everyday Ontarians.

Battery projects along with other renewables, like solar and wind, outcompete gas on every metric–they’re faster to build, more affordable and they’re where global investment dollars are flowing.

Yet the government continues to invest in expensive, polluting fossil gas—wasting taxpayer dollars, jacking up electricity prices and sacrificing jobs along the way.

Hopefully this win is a wake-up call for the government: renewables are the cheapest, cleanest source of power—it’s time to stop putting the profits of oil and gas giants ahead of affordable electricity for working people.”
