TORONTO – MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner issued the following statement in response to reports that Honda is suspending its Canadian EV plant plans:
“While global investment in EVs skyrockets, the government is sabotaging the market in Ontario by actively opposing an EV strategy that incentivizes demand.
Since taking office, the Premier has slashed EV affordability rebates, ripped out charging ports and blocked municipal attempts to make it easier to install chargers in new homes.
As a result, sales are tanking in Ontario while they rise in other provinces and countries.
In order to grow Ontario’s EV sector and create good jobs, we have to make EVs affordable for everyday Ontarians.
I continue to call on the government to build an EV strategy that actually incentivizes demand through an affordability rebate program for made-in-Ontario EVs and a procurement program for public-sector fleets.”
