QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement on the government’s review of the pit bull ban:
“I have long opposed breed-specific legislation that discriminates against certain dog breeds in the face of scientific evidence.
We know the best way to protect public safety is a community-based approach focused on responsible breeding, pet ownership and training.
Breed-specific laws are simply not as effective at reducing the incidence of bites and they result in the unnecessary euthanasia of hundreds of dogs and puppies.
I stand with the many groups, including humane societies and the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, who oppose breed-specific legislation.
I support a review of the Dog Owners Liability Act to look at the possibility of repealing the anti-pitbull elements.”
