  • Housing mandate letter a reminder of the Premier’s housing failures

GUELPH — MPP Mike Schreiner, released the following statement in response to the release of the Premier’s 2018 mandate letter to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

“With every passing day, it becomes clearer that the trail of broken Greenbelt promises leads back to the Premier.

In 2018, Ontarians made it loud and clear – they want the Greenbelt to be protected.

In 2022, they doubled down, making their voices heard in hundreds of thousands.

In the midst of this, the Premier misled Ontarians’ with full knowledge that the Greenbelt giveaway was already underway.

That’s why we need a full public inquiry to get to the bottom of this $8.3 billion scandal.

The Premier’s 2018 housing mandate letter is also a stark reminder of this government’s total failure to protect Ontario’s renters.

For years, Ontario’s rental rates have been far too high. And yet the government still ploughed ahead with a ploy to remove rent controls to help out profit-driven speculators.

Ontarians have had enough of broken promises and back-room deals.

That’s why I continue to fight for real solutions to repair our broken housing system, starting with reinstating rent controls on all rental units and passing my bills 44 and 45 to rapidly increase supply where people, especially young people, want to live.”
