  • Invest in schools, don’t put the squeeze on them

QUEEN’S PARK — Green Party of Ontario Leader, and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner, released the following statement as students went back to school across Ontario today:

“Back-to-school is a time when students, parents and educators are excited about the potential of another school year.

But this year a cloud of anxiety hangs over our education system.

With fewer educators and support staff, fewer classes in the jobs of the future, and fewer resources to help students succeed, the PC government is letting down students, parents and educators.

Ontario is making an irresponsible shift from a province that invests in schools to one that puts the squeeze on them.

And as a parent myself, I’m worried about how this government’s erratic decisions will affect my daughter’s future.

I worry about how students who are getting bullied will cope with fewer educational assistants.

I worry about how students with allergies will suffer in less hygienic schools with fewer custodial staff.

And I worry about the number of students who could get lost in the shuffle because there are simply fewer people in schools looking out for them.”
