  • Premier must stop sabotaging climate solutions
Queen’s Park – Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner is calling on the Premier to stop sabotaging climate solutions. Mr. Schreiner will be joining the Toronto Climate Strike rally today.

Open Letter to Hon. Doug Ford

Dear Premier Ford;

Thousands upon thousands of people are striking today for the climate, joining a global movement of young people worried about our future.

The climate crisis is the biggest threat facing humanity, and there is an urgency for all of us to act.

You have previously acknowledged that climate change is real and human-caused.

But since being elected, your government has:

  • Wasted $30 million on a legal battle to sabotage pollution pricing
  • Torn up nearly 800 job-creating renewable energy contracts
  • Forced gas stations to display misleading stickers
  • Cancelled rebates for electric vehicles and money saving energy efficiency retrofits
  • Cut funding to tree planting and flood protection

These are not signs that you take climate change seriously.

This is not how a leader responds to a crisis.

Premier, your government purports to be fiscally responsible.

Yet, your government is wasting our hard earned tax dollars on a campaign to sabotage solutions. And your government’s climate inaction exposes us to escalating financial risks.

It doesn’t have to be like this.

The urgency of the climate crisis requires us to work across party and ideological lines to build broad support to transform our economy — to create jobs and generate prosperity in the fast growing clean and caring economy.

As a business person, I would hope that you understand how important it is to invest in where the puck is going instead of where it has been.

I will be marching today with thousands of people who want you to hear their message.

Climate change is real and requires urgent action.

Premier, I sincerely hope you rise to moment and be the leader our youth need.

Let’s commit today to acting and preparing our communities for the changes that are already underway.

Thank you,

Mike Schreiner
Leader, Green Party of Ontario
