QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement on this morning’s FAO report:
“Today’s FAO report shows the dire state of homelessness in Ontario. The government needs to act now to make affordable housing an immediate priority.
The report is clear: without new policy measures, the government will fail to meet the goal of ending chronic homelessness in Ontario by 2025.
On any given night, there are at least 16,000 Ontarians out on the streets without a home.
We know that those without a home are at far higher risk of COVID. You can’t stay home if you don’t have a home.
And with the economic impacts of the pandemic hitting racialized and low-wage workers the hardest, more and more Ontarians will be pushed out onto the streets unless action is taken.
We need to extend the eviction moratorium and provide financial support for small landlords.
We need immediate investments in affordable and supportive housing to create healthier and safer communities that protect our most vulnerable populations.”
