  • Clock runs out on the Premier’s affordable housing failures

QUEEN’S PARK — MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to news that the federal government will transfer funding for affordable housing directly to city service managers, after the provincial government failed to meet its construction targets.

“While I’m glad that Ontario municipalities will still get the funding they need to build more affordable homes, the government’s failure to work with the federal government to meet its own affordable housing targets is incredibly disappointing.

The Premier’s failure to build affordable homes is harming people who are unhoused, making life less affordable and hurting communities and local businesses.

I have been calling on this government to get back into the business of building affordable and supportive homes for six years now.

That’s why we recently tabled a motion calling on the government to utilize unused or underused provincial and municipal land to build at least 250,000 affordable non-profit and co-op homes.

And it’s why we’ll keep pushing this government to step up with real solutions to ensure that everyone has a safe and affordable place to call home.”
