  • Further fossil gas procurements incompatible with clean-energy future

QUEEN’S PARK — MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to news that the government has procured 1,784 megawatts of clean energy storage and 411 MW of fossil gas and biogas.

“By keeping taxpayer dollars flowing to fossil fuel giants, the government is costing Ontarians more.

While I appreciate that the government is finally trying to catch up on years of missed opportunities to invest in clean-energy storage, its commitment is totally undermined by their plans to waste money on expensive, polluting fossil gas plants.

Low-cost renewables are the cleanest, cheapest source of energy available. If we want Ontario to be competitive in the trillion-dollar clean energy economy, it’s critical that we take every opportunity to move away from fossil fuels and capitalize on the wealth of renewable energy sources already at our fingertips.

There is no excuse for continued investment in fossil gas that puts our economic and environmental future in jeopardy.”
