  • Schreiner opposes blanket immunity for long-term care providers

QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after the Premier indicated he was considering civil liability protection:

“Residents and families of those who suffered preventable deaths in long-term care homes deserve justice.

I do not support blanket immunity for the long-term care sector – not after several hundred outbreaks and close to 2,000 deaths, the majority in a handful of companies.

The Premier needs to show that he cares more about our elders than about the private companies responsible for this neglect.

I recognize that we need to protect businesses and organizations that did everything in their power, with all the information available, to keep people from getting sick.

But we cannot ignore the possibility that some long-term care homes did not act in good faith and knowingly allowed poor standards of care to continue.

They need to be held accountable.

I will be opposed to any Get-Out-Of-Jail-Free card the Government tries to give to itself or to negligent long-term care providers.”
