QUEEN’S PARK — Mike Schreiner released the following statement after an Ontario judge granted permanent injunction against 1492 Land Back Lane camp:
“The land defenders of 1492 Land Back Lane have my support as they try to assert their treaty rights in the face of the continued seizure of their traditional territory.
This injunction is just another example of how our courts repeat the cycle of colonialism that has displaced and marginalized Indigenous people for centuries.
It is wrong to criminalize Indigenous groups who are merely defending the very few pieces of traditional land that have not been taken from them.
The federal and provincial governments must take responsibility for upholding land rights and protecting Indigenous Peoples’ sovereignty.”
