  • The Premier’s attacks on good planning have municipalities sounding the alarm

GUELPH — MPP Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to concerns from Collingwood’s town staff and council that the government’s proposed Provincial Planning Statement 2023 will lead to reckless urban sprawl and impede municipalities’ ability to manage growth.

“Turbo-charging costly sprawl. Putting unsustainable pressure on our public infrastructure. Destroying watersheds and soil health. And so much more.

All over the place, we see proof that this government’s attacks on good planning are bad for our health, bad for the environment, and bad for your wallet.

But still the Premier is ploughing ahead with a sprawl-at-all-costs agenda that will make the housing crisis worse.

Municipalities are right to be sounding the alarm.

We need to listen to experts across all sectors who are calling on the government to abandon its short-sighted planning schemes and work with local leaders to implement real solutions to the housing crisis.

I will continue pushing this government to put people first and commit to building homes people can actually afford in connected communities where they want to live, work and play.”
