  • The Premier’s refusal to invest in renewables puts the people of Ontario at risk

GUELPH — Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to a report that Ontario Power Generation, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy, SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. and Aecon Group Inc. are planning to build a small modular nuclear reactor at the province’s Darlington site.

“The people of Ontario will pay the price for the Premier’s risky refusal to invest in low-cost renewable energy in favour of high-cost SMRs.

Framing SMR technology as an affordable energy source is just misleading.

The Premier’s government is directly responsible for the energy crunch Ontario is now facing. Since taking office, it has cancelled 750 renewable energy projects, costing us millions, and efficiency programs that help people save money by saving energy. The Premier continues to move Ontario backwards in the midst of a climate emergency.

The bottom line is that the government can safeguard the people of Ontario’s best interests by investing in low-cost renewables as part of a diverse mix of electricity generation.”
